GlaxoSmithKline has said it will not face charges for failing to pay the full cost of its cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor for the first time.
The company said the US Food and Drug Administration required AstraZeneca to pay $1.9 billion (£1.3 billion) in damages to its members who had not yet filed a lawsuit against it.
The $1.9 billion will be reimbursed by the federal government as part of a plan to limit drug price increases.
The announcement by AstraZeneca came as the UK's drug industry faces fierce competition from rival statin drug Crestor, which has caused panic in Europe.
The European Commission, led by Dr Martin Bu purchaser and AstraZeneca, has been working to set up new drug giants to lower the price of cholesterol drugs.
They include Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bayer and Eli Lilly.

It said it would seek the US Court of Arbitration forSingapore's decision if it were to seek damages for harm that had been incurred by the company's executives.

The UK's largest pharmaceutical firm, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, said it was planning to launch a similar cholesterol drug called Crestor on a global stage in early 2007.
The UK's biggest drugmaker, AstraZeneca, said it had "certain regulatory and legal obligations to pay for this company's conduct and has taken steps to ensure that this is not a future product for the company and to pay for any damages arising out of this conduct."
The company also agreed to pay an extra $370 million (£180 million) to resolve litigation regarding the conduct of its sales force.
The company said the decision was a major blow to the industry, where it has faced pressure from regulators, as well as some critics of the industry.
